Synopsis

Ava Toliver is an average girl living in the middle class of Havaan. Ever since the war to ban magic, Havaan has only had two classes: Middle and Upper. She lives with her mom, who is so far buried in her depression that Ava constantly finds herself being the adult of their home. Besides Ava’s mom, the only other person in her life is Delilah, her best friend.

Delilah drags Ava with her to the Queen’s Gala, where the king and queen will choose a princess to marry their eldest son, Sebastian. The King and Queen will choose a girl from the upper class based on looks and first impressions to rule their kingdom. While Ava has no desire to go, she wants to support her Delilah and her dreams of becoming the future queen.

While Ava thought her evening would only consist of desserts and snacks, she is approached by an extremely handsome man, Nixon, who informs her that the King and Queen would like to speak with her. She is horrified to discover that she has been chosen as the future queen. After some push back against the royals, she is given a week to get her life in order and to move into the High House, where she will start preparing to take over Havaan.

Over the next week, Nixon is assigned to keep Ava safe and stays at her home while she packs up her old life and prepare for her new one. Once she moves into the High House, she is grateful to have Nixon as a friend. The adjustment to royal life is no walk in the park, but she is thankful for the support Sebastian gives her through her transition to royal life. He constantly sticks up for her and supports her goals making Ava think maybe she could really fall for him. However, no matter what she does and how hard she tries, she can’t seem to get Nixon out of her head or heart. However, she is going to be the next queen, and that is something she must accept.

But when she starts to discover secrets of the King and Queen that have to do with her past, she feels more lost than ever.

Review

The New Queen’s Crown was one of my favorite fantasy books I have read this year. Lindsey has such a way with words, making you feel like you are right there in the story with the characters. I was unable to put it down because I had to know what was going to happen next. The world building was perfect, and I felt as if I too was part of the Havaan community.

The banter in this book is superb. Ava’s character is witty and full of personality. I loved her interaction with both Nixon and Sebastian. She always had the perfect response to their comments. Nixon has quickly become my new favorite book boyfriend. The way he watched Ava and stood so close to her gave me butterflies.

Another character I really loved with Cordelia, Ava’s mom. Her character provided really great mental health rep, and Lindsey did such an amazing job expressing what it feels like when the “darkness” takes over.

I can’t wait to read the next novel in the series, especially with the cliffhanger. I hope book three will be out soon, but I will try to be patient until then!
