A Fate Inked In Blood by Danielle L. Jensen Review
The first thing that caught my eye about A Fate Inked In Blood by Danielle L. Jensen was the beautiful foil edges. I had no idea what the book was about, but I knew I wanted it–the life of a book lover. I did read the synopsis and figured I might as well get a copy so I could add it to my shelf of book trophies.
Synopsis
Freya is stuck in Selvegr with a husband, Vragi, she despises and a life she is unhappy with. The day of their arranged marriage a year prior, her father died of a heart complication. While this should have been a bad omen, she continued with the marriage. Vragi is a cruel man, but favored by the gods due to the drop of “special” blood that runs through him. And because he once saved all of Selvgr from famine, he is loved by the community.
When Freya is heading to deliver fish to her mother, she comes across her brother Geir. Jarl Snorri has Vragi with him, and offers Freya an opportunity to fight one of his warriors. The prize? iIf she is victorious she will earn a place in his army; if she loses, she dies..
Jarl Snorri chooses his son, Bjorn, to fight Freya. Bjorn is a child of Tyr, meaning he also has God's blood in his veins. His blood grants him the power of fire. Freya knows the only way to defend herself is to use the power she has hidden all of her life. But the minute she reveals her truth, her life will be changed forever.
Her fate is in her hands, but so is the safety of her family. In order to protect those she loves, Freya must obey Jarl Snorri willingly. But Bjorn’s presence is a distraction, and she is not sure if she can hide the feelings burning inside her for long.
Review
A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen is book one of her Saga of the Unfated Series. This was my first book by Jensen and now I know I need to go back and read all of her previous books as well.
At first I was feeling weirded out about the dynamic between Snorri, Freya, and Bjorn, but I quickly felt better as the story progressed. The chemistry between Bjorn and Freya was incredible. I loved their witty banter and how their friendship continued to grow throughout the book. Freya started to annoy me a little at the end with her indecisiveness, which is why this was a four star read instead of a five star.
A Fate Inked in Blood was a fun, page-turning read. I loved the mystery l and how Danielle Jensen created such an intricate world. It was challenging at times to keep up with all of the terminology, but it started to come together and make sense after about a quarter of the way in. I know with fantasy books we need a lot of pages in order to get all of the world building in. I appreciate that this book was not 800 pages, but towards the end it felt like there was almost too much f content packed into the last fourth of the book.
The ending was awesome because it has some surprises, but it also had some plot reveals that I saw coming. I need more people to read this so we can talk about it!
Sometimes you just buy a book based on the cover and its edges. I am so glad that I picked up this book. I thought it might have taken me a few days to read it, but I could not put it down. I ended up also ordering the kindle copy to make it easier to read so that I would not wake up my husband at night. Worth it!
I am looking forward to reading book two, even though we do not know when to expect its arrival.
